Curriculum Overview
Our curriculum is designed to be engaging, inspiring and interesting. We aim to provide our children with the knowledge and skills to become valuable members of modern British society and to be able to change the world for the better.
An overview of the units studied in each subject can be found in the documents at the foot of this page.
We teach subjects discretely so we can retain the integrity of each subject area. To support with this, we have designed 'Subject Fingerprints', which are the 5 key disciplinary skills that we want our children to master so that they can start to think in the way that an expert does in that subject area. This is shared in child-speak with the children to help them to think, for example, 'like a historian'. This will enable them to apply their growing substantive knowledge in discipline-appropriate ways. The 'fingerprints' for all of our subjects can be accessed below.
Assessment is an integral part of every lesson through retrieval practice and questioning. End of unit assessment checks children's recall but also how effectively they make connections across their learning, with time build in to address gaps in learning.
As an academy with mixed-age classes, we carefully track which units our children have studied, which areas of the curriculum they have learned and which skills and knowledge they have embedded. This informs future planning to ensure that every child participates in a broad and balanced curriculum, which fully covers the National Curriculum objectives in all areas.
To supplement the subjects that we teach, trips and experiences happen throughout the year. These include workshops, coach visits and whole-school opportunities such as the always-popular pantomime show.
As well as immersive experiences, a strong foundation curriculum offer and a rigorous core curriculum, we also ensure that our children engage with an outstanding personal development curriculum. We carefully plan our worship calendar to provide opportunities to think deeply, reflect together and question and challenge injustice and preconceptions. There are a number of leadership opportunities available to children, so that they can contribute to making the school a better place for their peers. In particular, older children support the younger children wonderfully. More details can be found on our Personal Development page.
Finally, our enrichment offer is important to us. Children have the opportunity to participate in after-school sports clubs, as well as competitive sports against other schools. Elective music lessons are also very popular. We are proud of the proportions of children that take up these opportunities:
- 42% of children have participated in elective music lessons
- 50% of children have participated in an after-school club
- 31% of children have represented the academy in sporting competition against other schools.
We are very proud of the curriculum offer at St Peter's. Please explore our website to learn more about it. If you are interested in joining our family, then we would love to hear from you. Our contact details can be found here.
